PAW PATROL PARTY

So here’s the thing guys… I LOVE a good party! I am all about events and preparing for them! The planning process is almost more fun for me than the party or event itself! From choosing a theme to color schemes and food choices, I am ALL about the “project”!

Over the past few years I’ve been able to throw birthday parties for Jaden that have been SO much fun! He just turned 5 in March, so I’ve been able to throw him 5 awesome parties!

EVENTS ARE IN MY BLOOD

Party planning isn’t something that’s been new to me since becoming a mama. Being the daughter of a wedding planner, I was immersed in the event planning world. Growing up I was always wanting to plan events!

My brother’s birthday is in July and mine in October. When I was younger, my parents always told me that I couldn’t start “planning” my birthday until Daniel’s was over!

My parents always joke that I’m “obsessed” with my birthday. The reality is, I just wanted to plan an event and my birthday was the only one they’d let me have a say in!

In high school I had more chances to plan events outside my own birthday. Any friend I could throw a surprise party for, I would! As a sophomore in high school, I surprised my best friend for her sweet 16 as well as my other friend for her 18th.

(Apparently it was a hit because I was then asked to throw her mom a surprise 50th!)  I even threw my parents a surprise 25th anniversary party that same year!

FIRST COMES THE PLAN

Before I could throw any of these events, like any project, I needed a plan. With Jaden’s Paw Patrol Party, I started off by doing my typical “pinterest research.”

When researching, I look at how others have set up their parties, I look at what decorations they’ve made or bought. Like I’ve said before, I am a total “DIYer”. (Check out my first post for more on this!)

I’m pretty sure this is just hardwired into the way I think. When I’m looking at something that sticks out to me, I start to dissect how it’s made. (I talk about this in my DIY headboard post!)

If something catches my eye, I’ll figure out how it’s made or how to make something close to it.

THE LISTS

Being the planner that I am, I am ALL about lists. Having a visual of what I need to purchase, make, and what I need to do is so helpful. Organization is KEY for a successful event! To be honest, though, I wasn’t always this way!

Growing up I was ALWAYS disorganized. There were countless times I lost track of something, didn’t get something done in time, lost an item, etc. I constantly felt scattered and unproductive.

(Be sure to check back here and on Instagram and Pinterest for a post coming soon on organization!)

Luckily, I’ve taken a LOT of steps forward and grown to be a very organized person!

PARTY ON A BUDGET

Like many, we don’t want to break the bank just to throw a birthday party for our little ones. Staying on budget is very important to us! We’ve been able to throw our parties for just a few $100! Here’s how…

Decorations make the party for sure. BUT they don’t have to be CRAZY expensive! I mainly shop at Dollar Tree or Walmart for the basics and either grab the rest at Party City or Amazon.

Dollar Tree not only has party supplies like balloons, streamers, paper products, etc. it also has excellent craft materials to make the party decorations out of!

Some of my favorite items to repurpose or use for decorations are their poster boards and their plastic table cloths. You would be AMAZED at what you can do with those two items!

There are a few items I splurge for. (And when I say splurge, I mean something that costs more than $10-$15.) If there is a cake topper or some sort of custom fondant decoration on etsy I’m looking for, then I go for it. (Mama’s got skills… but not those skills!)

THE DECORATIONS

For Jaden’s Paw Patrol party, I had a bit of a learning curve for how to throw parties at our house. We had only lived in our house for about 6 months at the time, so I hadn’t worked out the kinks on the best ways to “use my house” for a party.

The first item I made was the Paw Patrol badge with his name on the front. I used a white poster board as the base and did my best to trace the shape onto the poster. Just use a pencil to trace the shape. I kept making adjustments until the sides were symmetrical and it had the correct shape.

This is the same technique I used for the letters and the bone as well. (Also, it doesn’t have to be PERFECT. It’s a kids party and having letters slightly different sizes is hardly noticeable. It can also add to the feel of being a kids party!)

Besides the Paw Patrol badge, I made another poster as a “welcome sign” when people entered. This one obviously had way less effort put into but it was still a cute addition to the party!

(I used the same poster board technique to make the welcome poster too.)

When it came time to put up the decorations, I wasn’t exactly sure where to display the badge, so I ended up hanging it from our curtain rod by the sliding glass door.

Like I said above, I hadn’t yet perfected my “party system” at our new house yet. For later parties, we started having our buffet be the main display with a “backdrop.”

To give the badge somewhat of a “backdrop,” I ran streamers from my curtain rod to the floor in vertical spirals. This gave a great pop of color and perfect background for the badge to hang in front of.

Besides hanging streamers from the curtain rod, I put streamers across the ceiling in an “X” formation with small balloon clusters hiding the ends.

THE TABLE

We totally lucked out with the Paw Patrol theme. Because Jaden loved them so much, he had a good handful of cute toys we used on the table. They were such a fun addition to the decor!

For the cake, I did order a small set of the Paw Patrol “pups”. For a while, I struggled with how best to display them on the table.

However, while I was at Dollar Tree, I grabbed several of their square and rectangle bins to use as “lifts” for the toys and decorations. This gave the table decorations awesome levels! I was very pleased with how it turned out!

So you’d think after all this time I would’ve broke down and bought a cup cake stand. BUT! I have not… So while at the store, I found red and blue plates that I glued together with a candle stick to act as cupcake holders.

Dollar Tree also had some striped paper straws that always add a good pop of color on the table.

Another decoration that’s easy to fall back on is a framed print or sign that goes with the theme and says the birthday boy’s name!

THE FOOD

To tie in the food, I made small food labels that fit in nicely with the Paw Patrol theme. I used things like “pups in a blanket” (hot dogs in puff pastry), “pup treats” (Scooby Doo Snacks), “pup-corn”, “pup-cakes”, dog bone shaped rice krispie treats, etc. Basically anything puppy or dog themed worked!

While I was at Dollar Tree, I found the cutest dog bowls that happened to be the correct colors! They were PERFECT to serve food out of! Such a cute addition to the theme!

For the cake, I used a dog bone shaped cake pan. (If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t have doubled the recipe and made it shorter!) I use this icing recipe for all my cakes!

The cupcakes were very simple! I piped them with icing and put different sized marshmallows sliced in half to make a paw print! Too cute!

The party came together SO nicely! For our first party thrown in our home, we were so pleased with how it turned out! And most importantly, our sweet Jaden had the BEST 3rd birthday ever! (And we didn’t break the bank!)
